After last weekend's disappoinment at the Belgian Grand Prix, McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton has moved on, aiming to seal his first victory at Monza in Italy. Hamilton, whose future remains a question, was taken out of the race by being forced onto the grass by Lotus driver Romain Grosjean, then piling into Ferrarri driver Fernando Alonso in what was a heavy collision at the the start of the race in Belgium.
The best result of the British driver at Monza was a second place finish in 2007, having passed then-Ferrari driver Kimi Räikkönen in the closing stages.
“Spa was just one of those weekends,” says Hamilton. “But the beauty of these double-header races is that it’s already firmly behind me and Monza is such a unique and invigorating circuit that it’s easy to put my disappointments to one side and just focus on driving as fast as possible this weekend."
“For me, there’s something about Formula 1’s older circuits that’s very special; despite each being very different, the newer tracks all seem to have the same character and the same sort of rhythm, but the older circuits are very different. They feel like the land has shaped and influenced them rather than the other way around. I like that...it means you never fall into any particular comfort zone and you’re always pushing the car one way or the other to get the best from any lap. I’ve never won at Monza before. I’ll be doing everything I can to take the victory.”
With eight more races to go in this year's campaign, the McLaren driver has fallen back behind Lotus driver Kimi Räikkönen to fifth in the drivers championship and now sits 47 points in arrears of current Championship leader Fernando Alonso.
